Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah, is an American performer, actress and acrobat. Queen Latifah's performance in television and music has resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. a police officer. Latifah's mother and father separated when Latifah turned ten. Latifah went to Catholic school and received her education at Newark New Jersey. She attended in the Baptist church. Latifah means gentle and very gentle. Her cousin gave it to her when she was 8. Latifah, a 5'10" tall forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. The play she played in her high school, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's original group, made up of a variety of MCs, as well as producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The single caught the eye to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first single Wrath of My Madness.
